Taking Your Driving Test? Why Calming Yourself First Can Make All the Difference

Feeling nervous before a driving test is totally normal — but research shows that high stress can reduce focus, slow reaction time, and make it harder to remember what you’ve learned. Calming your body and brain first can actually improve your driving performance.
Simple ways to calm before your test:
  • Breathe slowly: Try a 4-second inhale, 6-second exhale for one minute to reduce stress hormones.
  • Do a quick body reset: Roll your shoulders, relax your jaw, unclench your hands.
  • Use positive cues: Remind yourself, “I’ve practised this. I can do it.”
  • Arrive early: Rushing spikes anxiety — being early lets your brain settle.
  • Focus on the first minute only: Starting calm helps the whole test go smoother.

Meta cognition and why it matters

Meta cognition is simply the process of thinking about how we think. For all people neurotypical and neurodiverse it is important to have healthy brain development and to help ourselves to better understand  how to develop the thinking brain or our prefrontal cortex. The logical thinking brain or brain 3. Brain 2 is our emotional brain which is where emotional regulation develops and is coordinated. Usually we are great at transfering when we need to move  from brain 3 and 2.  Meta cognition helps us to do this. After all how can we develop if we don't first understand how the brain is thinking. 
For ADHD people this is important so they can improve the executive function skills needed to change the way the brain is responding. First assess the task that needs to be done, evaluate your strengths and weaknesses to do the task. We need to know what we are good at and what we need help with to achieve the task. Then you are able to plan the best approach to take to do the task. The who, why, what, when, where. Then just do it. After this we always need at assess and gain feedback so we can continuously improve the outcome. 
This loop of developing meta cognition can be applied to all tasks we do big and small. This helps people learn , develop and self train.

Why does the right instructor matter?

Many neurodiverse learners  have already lived their lives through challenges and trying to fit into a world that does not fit. For many of us on the spectrum  we have had rejection, anxiety, depression and the not belonging.  So it is no surprise when it comes to driving, a complex, social skill we doubt ourselves.  The majority of drivers  on the neurodiverse spectrum have gone through 4 - 6 instructors searching for the right fit. Each instructor may chip away at the very little confidence we had. I have had students tell me  stories of being called derogatory terms and that they are not capable of driving or should never drive. 
There is a wonderful quote  we love to use here at Neurodiverse driver training :“If a child can't learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn.”― Ignacio Estrada

This is true for children and adults and especially those on the spectrum.  Not all instructors are trained in neurodiversity , inclusion or educational methods.  You need to seek out those that are trained , have experience, and  are able to be flexible to your training needs. Dynamic instructors that can bend and change the way they deliver  skills to you so you can learn the best way for you and how your brain processes. Don't give up, neurodiverse people are amazing when taught the way that suits them.
